Unlikely Hero

They look at him, astonished,
as if not knowing what to see.
They talk - just a few words.
Some cry, others laugh.
Someone turns his head away.

Then he turns around
and disappears in the shadows.

When he has gone,
they stand closer to each other.
His footsteps burst into blossom,
the ground at their feet begins to sprout
and the fragrance of summer fills every place.
